Life, Liberty, and the
Pursuit of Happiness
The Founders established this country under the premise that each citizen had the freedom to pursue “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” This idea and the generations of Americans committed to preserving it have led to the United States becoming the most powerful country in the history of the world. Hundreds of millions of people have earned their success in a dynamic market economy—the American Dream is the promise that each person will have the opportunity to do better than their forbearers if they work hard.
The American Dream
is Under Threat
Today, however, the American Dream is under threat. The United States’ fundamental commitment to free markets, individual rights, and free expression is being attacked by forces who seek to centralize power in the federal government, limit freedom, and undermine the core institutions that bring Americans from all walks of life together.
It's Time to Reset the
National Conversation
The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) launched the American Dream Initiative to reset the national conversation and drive it toward an appreciation of the American Dream’s core tenets, chief among them that hard work and earned success—coupled with free enterprise, capitalism, and limited, constitutional government—are the foundations of human flourishing and lead to better outcomes for the country and for all Americans.
